With the re-election of the ACT government, our pre-election priorities will continue to drive our discussions with returning officials.

The Puppy Farming Bill addresses longstanding concerns surrounding dog breeding practices, however the AVA holds reservations about certain provisions.

Animal Medicines Australia have prepared an information sheet for vets on responsible disposal of veterinary medicines. They also have public-facing information on waste disposal with regards to animal medicines and containers.

In recent years, Guild Insurance has identified an increase in cold stock-related claims. Any loss of refrigerated stock can significantly impact your veterinary practice and clients. While ordering its replacement may sound like a simple solution, there’s no guarantee that the stock will be delivered before your patients need it.

The APVMA has requested stakeholder input in relation to the proposed guidelines for determining a minor use. Minor use permits are issued to allow for the legal use of AgVet chemicals in situations where registration of the product would not produce sufficient economic return. A minor use may include use on a minor crop, animal or non-crop situation, or limited use on a major crop, animal or situation.

This week, the AVA welcomed the NSW Government’s response to the Inquiry into Veterinary Workforce Shortages in New South Wales report and recommendations. While we would have liked to see more commitment on timeframes and funding for key recommendations, we look forward to working with the NSW Government to implement recommendations aimed at addressing workforce shortages, mental health, and regulatory reforms.

AVA's regular proactive advocacy efforts include meeting with veterinary boards to support the profession at state levels. AVA values the opportunity to meet with state vet boards, where the ongoing dialogue ensures that the profession's concerns are heard and addressed. The AVA's QLD Division met with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland (VSBQ) in late September.
