The Western Australian Division is active in lobbying government on issues relating to animal welfare and veterinary practice in Western Australia.

The Division holds an annual conference and trade fair. Educational and social events are also held through the WA Branches.

The Division actively participates in the AVA Graduate Mentor Program, where new graduates are partnered with a volunteer mentor to support them in their first year in practice.

This month we’ve pivoted a few plans and roles in order to better deliver opportunities to the membership. I’d like to thank the new heads of the Southern Rural Branch Dr Jess Schilling and Dr Milly Watts for stepping into the role of branch leader and I look forward to seeing what our gatherings in 2025 will bring.
The WA Division Committee held its annual in-person meeting in August, kindly hosted at the offices of Xsights Digital in Fremantle.
Following up on last month's newsletter, I was approached by ABC radio for two separate interviews surrounding regional veterinary services in WA. In particular, we spoke about the provision of out of hours emergency services and the overall shortage of vets in regional towns.

Normally I’d be writing this monthly update from the bottom of the state down in Esperance, this time I’m writing from the opposite end of state- Hall’s Creek. Not only has the change in location offered a bit of perspective but the reason for being here – as part of the Murdoch University Final Year spey and neuter program has also opened my eyes to the needs of vets in this great state of WA.
